'A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE'
by Mriga Gupta | Oct 22, 2010 at 01:18 PM
MEANING: A timely effort will prevent more work later.
The question usually asked is” Save nine what?" The stitch n time is simply the sewing up
of a small hole in a space of material and so saving the need for more stitching at a later
date, when the hole has become larger, clearly, the first users of this expression were
referring to save nine stitches.
The proverb is very well known, but not in common verbal usage. It is mostly considered the
kind of thing one’s grandparents might say, where the younger receivers of the advice would
probably not understand the meaning.
A little effort made sooner to fix a small problem, prevents it from becoming a larger
problem requiring a lot of effort to fix them. A little preparation can eliminate the need
for repairs later, consistency is better than trying to rush ahead.
This proverb expresses a similar idea to that of "An ounce of prevention is worth o pound
of cure."
Example:-
I advice fix the leak now. If not, you might need to replace the whole engine later. Fixing
the leak cost Rs.50/-, but you need to pay at least Rs.1000/-to replace an engine.
